Carmel, Ind. (December 17, 2018) – After 15 years serving as director for Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR), Mark Westermeier has announced his retirement effective December 28.
During Westermeier’s tenure, he oversaw the launch of the Extended School Enrichment program at Carmel Clay Schools and the opening of the Monon Community Center and Central Park as well as Founders and West Park. In his honor, West Commons will officially be known as “Westermeier Commons.”
In Westermeier’s mind, CCPR’s biggest accomplishments under his direction include receiving a Gold Medal Award for Excellence as well as creating an atmosphere in which staff could grow and fulfill their own professional goals.
“In our industry, the Gold Medal Award is a standard to which everyone strives, but very few succeed. I am very proud of that,” he said. “I have also enjoyed mentoring our young professionals here and watching them grow into leadership roles, both here and with other organizations throughout the country.”
CCPR Chief Operating Officer Michael Klitzing will serve as interim director until the board names a replacement. That decision is expected shortly after the new year begins.
