Accessible, Sensory-Friendly Race to Support Adaptive Recreation Programs
Carmel, Ind. (April 25, 2023) – Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR) will host its second annual Adaptive 5k Race on Saturday, May 13 at 10 a.m. The race is in Carmel’s Central Park, located at 1195 Central Park Drive East. All course trails are accessible, and the race itself is sensory-friendly.
“We wanted to create a race experience that all people, especially those with cognitive and developmental disabilities, could enjoy,” shared CCPR Inclusion Program Supervisor, Kelvin Solares. “Most racing environments are loud, hectic, and over-stimulating, which is exhilarating to some, but a barrier for others. CCPR’s Adaptive 5k Race is accessible and sensory-friendly, intentionally created to give all participants a space to get competitive and have fun.”
CCPR’s Adaptive 5k Race welcomes people with and without disabilities to participate in the event. Individual race support is available for all participants, if needed. Proceeds will go toward CCPR’s continued effort to provide low-cost recreation programs to the adaptive community.
Registration for the Adaptive 5k Race is now open. Cost is $25 per participant. All ages are welcome to participate. Pre-registration is required.
