Actors with disability create and perform original production in celebration of Developmental Disability Awareness Month
Carmel, Ind. (March 1, 2022) – Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR) will hold its annual Barrier-Free Theater performance in honor of Developmental Disability Awareness Month. This year’s performance, titled World Gone Rocked, will be held in person at the Monon Community Center March 12 at 6 p.m. and March 13 at 2 p.m. An ASL interpreter will be provided for the Saturday showing.
Barrier-Free Theater is a form of drama therapy that empowers individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities to create and perform original stories together. The entire creative process takes around eight months to complete.
“We started brainstorming topics months ago,” said Sarah Fenster, CCPR Barrier-Free Theater Director. “The cast members played with different topics, characters, and scenes that resonated with them – many relating to the pandemic. The final performance will be a product of the many hours they spent collaborating, rehearsing, and memorizing.”
World Gone Rocked recaps the emotions and shared experiences many of us have endured over the past two years. The production explores ways in which we cope and rely on one another to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
“The hope is that our community can learn more about the actors, hear their true voices, and walk away with a new understanding of their experiences,” shared Fenster. “They’ve put a lot of pride and joy into this show. I’m sure the final performances will be sure to surprise and impress.”
Pre-registration is required to attend the show. Tickets are $10 each and are available for purchase online now through March 10. Attendees will be seated with their own party, physically distanced from other parties within the auditorium. Masks are optional.
