When August rolls around we will enter our 12th school year of Extended School Enrichment. ESE is our before and after- school program offered at all eleven Carmel Clay elementary schools. When the school year wraps up our staff switch gears to focus on our Summer Camp Series.
Every year, parents have a similar concern. “Will my child be safe and have fun at summer camp?” The answer here at Carmel Clay Parks is a resounding, “Yes, they will!” We pride ourselves on a phenomenal staff! We want to share with you how we choose and train the folks who take on the important job of kid counselor during our ESE and Summer Camp programs!
Our Kid Counselors make up the largest group of employees for ESE and Summer Camp. The Kid Counselors are the ones who make it all happen. They are responsible for the well-being of the kids from sign-in to sign-out. And boy, does a lot happen during that window of time! During the school year, it ranges from homework to arts & crafts to recess. During the summer, it includes exploring parks, splashing in The Waterpark and field trips. It is safe to say that Kid Counselors never have a dull moment.
Although it’s a lot of fun, being a Kid Counselor takes a lot of work. All of our Kid Counselors are responsible, creative, patient and full of energy. They plan the daily enrichment programs, facilitate field trips and take care of odds and ends. The students look up to Kid Counselors each and every day because they are leaders, teachers, planners and most importantly, role models.
Because of the great responsibility Kid Counselors have, we go through a very selective hiring process. We want to ensure that only the best qualified staff are selected for the job. It is vital to find staff who truly care and are committed to working with kids. It takes year-round effort to recruit our superb team.
Each Kid Counselor goes through a rigorous selection process including interviews, a national, state and local background check, reference checks and a drug screening. Once on board they receive CPR, First Aid, AED and CPI training enabling them to handle unexpected emergencies. They also take a Stewards of Children course, which teaches them to recognize, react to and prevent child sexual abuse.
We take pride in providing the safest and most enjoyable atmosphere possible for the kids entrusted in our care. We receive consistent positive feedback from the community and we are proud to have our efforts recognized by the Darkness to Light in Prevention Distinction.
